What material are children's toys made of?


Nowadays, there are many kinds of plastic toys sold on the market that are dangerous, and many toys are still substandard, but the children's resistance in all aspects is relatively weak.

As a result, the materials used in toys on the market are varied. In addition to considering the appearance of the toys, parents should seriously consider the materials of the toys, such as plastic toys. Whether the material is used properly or not is related to the health of the child.

But plastic toys are a big category of toys. There are many raw materials for plastic toys, such as ABS, PVC, PP, PC, PE, EVA, PU, ​​etc. Let me talk about them separately!

1. ABS

ABS is the main material for inserting building blocks. The three letters stand for "acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene".

The main reason why ABS is used for inserting building blocks is its good dimensional stability, and the basic particles made can maintain the same height. At the same time, ABS has high hardness and toughness and will not become brittle even at low temperatures (low temperature resistance-40°). Then, it is resistant to fall and wear.

In addition to building blocks, some models (such as Gundam, Transformers, plastic dolls, etc.), automobiles (inertial pull-back cars, electric vehicles, riding strollers), and crawling plastic toys will all use ABS. The purpose is to prevent break.

2. PVC doll material

PVC can be hard or soft. The hard water pipes below can be made of PVC, and the soft pipes and slippers can be made of PVC. As far as plastic toys are concerned, PVC is the most used material.

Most of the toys (except for balls) that need to be inflated are made of PVC, such as croissants, vaulting horses, and balloons.

Animal models (in the category of children’s toys) that have both soft and hard feel will basically use PVC as the main material, such as the dinosaurs of Sile and PAPO:

Rigid PVC is relatively less used in toys. Toys made of PVC material cannot be disinfected with boiling water. It is OK to disinfect them directly with toy cleaner, or just wipe with a cloth dipped in soapy water.

3. PP

Compared with the above two materials, PP has the advantage that it can be put in a microwave oven. Therefore, it is often used as a container to hold food, oil, condiments, etc., such as lunch boxes and fresh-keeping boxes. After PC baby bottles were banned for sale a few years ago, PP became the main material for plastic baby bottles.

In toys, PP materials are mainly used in small toys such as teethers and rattles. Firstly, they can be imported, and secondly, they can be sterilized in high-temperature water.

4. PC

Before 2011, PC-based baby bottles were popular all over the world, but they are now banned. The reason for the ban is that the PC material contains bisphenol A (BPA). The European Union believes that BPA can induce precocious puberty, cause endocrine disorders, and threaten the health of fetuses and children, so it is banned.

In the same way, PC toys may also contain BPA. There are similar toys on the market, but they are all very inexpensive ones.

5. PE

Soft PE is mainly used for film products, such as food cling film and plastic bags; its rigid characteristics are suitable for one-shot injection molding products and hollow products.

Specifically in the application of toys, PE is most typical for rocking horses and slides, which need to be formed at one time. At the same time, there are hollow medium and large toys in the middle:

For the safety of babies, medium and large toys should be molded at one time as much as possible, and the assembled ones are relatively prone to accidents.

In addition, the mainstream baby crawling mats (floor mats) sold in the domestic market are basically PE and EVA.

6. EVA

In toy applications, in addition to floor mats, EVA is mainly used to make foam wheels for strollers, as well as some softer masks and water injection teether (EVA has good water resistance):

PU should be the most familiar to everyone. During the Spring Festival when I was a child, I often heard adults say that you can't afford a leather jacket, so buy a PU.

Our common baby carriages, such as strollers, scooters, balance bikes, and bicycles, have basically three wheels: foamed, solid, and inflatable. In addition to the above EVA foam wheel, there is another kind of PU.

The gutta-percha Manhattan ball, which has been popular in the past two years, has a small tube made of PU. Therefore, the Manhattan ball cannot be sterilized by high temperature, it can only be cleaned with warm water.

8. TPR and silicone

Strictly speaking, TPR and silica gel are neither plastic nor rubber. These two materials are more widely used in adult products.

The application of TPR (commonly called TPE) in toys is mainly used in balls, such as crystal pinballs, hole balls, Oball balls, etc. In addition, TPR is also useful in teethers, but it cannot be boiled in water.

Silicone material is more expensive than TPR and other plastic materials, so it can only be used on small toys.

The characteristics of silica gel are high temperature resistance (-40° to 230°), and it can be boiled in boiling water, and it can also be used in dishwashers and microwave ovens. And silica gel does not produce any toxic and harmful substances from the raw material entering the factory to the finished product shipment. So in recent years, silicone has gradually become the main material of gutta percha.

It should be noted that many sellers of TPR teether claim that they are medical silicone. This is completely deceptive. Silicone teether can be sterilized in various ways, but TPR cannot be sterilized by high temperature. Parents should keep their eyes open.
